  • hi Ben,

    hope you get to see this since you have not leave your email address to reply back to.

    you actually DO NOT need to "UPLOAD" the MT4 platform. when you are connected to your VPS, just treat it like your own computer. IE : if you need MT4 on your computer, you will need to install it. so from within your VPS, you will need to open your internet browser, surf to your broker's website and download/install the MT4 platform. if you did all this from within your VPS, you would have successfully INSTALLED your MT4 platform in your VPS.

    it's hard to get used to using a VPS at first.... but as long as you think of it as a standalone computer, you should be fine. but since it is not physically in front of you, getting files onto your VPS may be a challenge. there are many ways to "TRANSFER" files to your VPS, but the most popular way is still to simply email (using YMail, GMail, HotMail..etc) to yourself, and then from winthin your VPS, open your web browser, access your web mail and detach/download the file(s) from your email to your VPS. once you can visualise how this is done and why you need to do it this way, everything will start to make sense.

    hope the above helps mate. good luck!

    Hi Nick,
    thank you very much for your support. At the moment I can't check your hint as I have some EA running on my Metratrader 4 on VPS. I will revert asap.

  • Nick
    Hi, I just checked the command that I run, that does work to reboot the system via scheduled tasks it is:-

    C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /r /t 60 /f

    So it differs from your command only by the space between the /t and the 60

    If you try running the command manually in a "cmd" window you should either see it show an error or it should start trying to shut the system down (which you can cancel)

    I do remember that when I first set up the system I struggled to get the command to work because of something like the "comment" option not working, so eventuall I just discarded that option.

    Hi CK,
    first of all I want to thank you in deep for this outstanding VPS Guide for MT4. I appreciate it very much. Unfortunately, as I am not an expert on IT, I am still struggling with the daily restart (scheduled task). I have read your notice to Kian and Dave on April 15, 2008. The simplifying of the command line c:\\windows\\system32\\shutdown.exe /r /t60 /f does not work for me. Now I am on the way of trying to implement the suggestion of Kian (April 16,2008) regarding the \"autoreboot.bat\". What still left me helpless is the correct design of the referring command line c:\\windows\\system32\\shutdown.exe ......
    Could you, Kian or anybody else be of help? Thanks very much in advance and best regards from Germany,
    Jochen
  • Hi Rapheal. You are most welcome :O)

    Hi Brawn. I hope you found your solution already.
    If not, have a read here : http://ckowyong.com/blog/?p=28#comment-810

    1) Once you can get into console mode, terminate all TERMINAL.EXE processes that are running.

    2) Then start your MT4 platform (making sure only one is running) and disable your EA if necessary

    3) Close the duplicate orders if you do not want to manually manage them. Hopefully that are in profit!

    4) Enable your EA again and it should continue where it left off.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi,

    I have a problem. I had accidentally logged into the normal TS mode and found that mutiple trades now taking place. How do i login to the console mode then which i thought was the case usually?

    Hi ck,
    thank you for your great manual and this web site. i have learnt a lot from this web. thank you very much

  • @Boen : Frankly, we will never know what VPS providers are doing to our servers. If their service is giving you problems, consider moving to another provider with better uptime and service. Consider CommercialNetworkServices.com

    @GS : Sorry. Mr Google should be able to help you better.

    CK
  • Hi Ng and Nick,

    Thanks for keeping the discussion going in my absence.

    I have seen this behaviour recently at SWVPS's new VPS. I am not sure if it affects all their other VPS servers though.

    Did some diging and found a few articles that may be useful :

    http://www.corypratt.com/?p=15

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324737
    "Registry change will not work if the “Logon Banner” is defined on the server either by a Group Policy object (GPO) or by a local policy. When policy is changed to not impact server, the feature works as expected."

    My guess is that the VPS provider may have made some policy changes on the VPS that affects the AutoAdminLogon feature. If you are running your own server and have not made any environmental changes, then my guess is as good as yours.

    If you are really stuck, consider moving to CNS (CommercialNetworkServices). They have a AutoBoot program for VPS users ( http://helpdesk.commercialnetworkservices.net/i... )... ideal for MT4 traders.

    Hope the above helps!

    Hi

    I'm looking for a good reasonably priced VPS in Switzerland with monthly payments (monthly commitment), as many VPS providers in Switzerland ask for annual sign up.

    Any ideas?

    I you are starting from an xp box & logging using remote desktop then that can either connect as the main console or another remote session.

    If you have recently updated xp via microsoft updates then that might have switched the default behaviour from connecting as console, the main session, to connecting as a second, new, non console session. (it did that to me because of an auto update at some point)

    Have you actually checked that you are logged onto 2003 server as the main/console session....
    Are you able to get to the task manager on win 2003 & see what's running?

    Nick
  • NG WAY HUCK
    I\'m running windows 2003 server.
    As I said, it doesn\'t behave that way before. I\'m logging on like I always did when it\'s working. Also, my EA doesn\'t open trades when it should be, indicating the mt4 is not running when it need to open trades.

    And no, my EA doesn\'t have any bugs. Also, I\'ve followed the guide 6 times.
  • Nick
    Oh sorry I just noticed you said cmd.exe .....

    Isn't that just what used to be, back in the day, a "dos" box.....

    i.e. it doesn't do anything by itself anyway? (well other than open a command prompt/window)

    Nick
  • Nick
    OK so your "start.cmd" file should be in

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    & obviously you should be logged on as administrator.

    Have you confirmed that you only have one session going when you log on?

    Are you running windows 2003 server or what?

    As I said before the start command runs for every session that logs in, so even if auto login is working & you are not logged in as console, you will see it run when you log in (despite the fact that it will already have run)

    What evidence have you that it is not already running?

    Nick
  • NG WAY HUCK
    Yes, I'm very sure about that. It doesn't start at all until I log in.
    If I didn't log in, it will never start.
  • Nick
    Are you sure you are logging in as the console i.e the main sesssion & not as another "new" connection?

    The startup script will be run by the server at start-up BUT it will also be run by each new session as well....

    A simplistic way to check is to do (if it will let you) alt control delete & get up the task manager.

    Under the users tab it should show only one user, I think the console comes up a user zero

    If there is more than one users shown then one of them is a) not the console b) probably your current session...

    I'm not sure if I've explained that quite right, but I think it matches what you are describing.

    Hi,
    I have a problem. I've set my VPS to auto-logon. It's working fine until some days ago.
    It does not auto-logon. The cmd.exe only start when I logon. I test it again by restarting and waiting for 30 minutes. The cmd.exe again start in front of my eyes. Which indicated it doesn't start until I logon. Which also mean it does not auto-logon before I do.

    Anyone know how to solve this? I've checked the registry several times even redo it 5 times.
    Same thing happened.

    Hello ckowyong,
    I using VPSLand.com and yesterday, suddenly I can not login into my account. my password rejected and i have contact the provider then they resolve with new password for me.
    Why ? do you have experience like me ?
    Are they can do something into my forex account ?

    regards,
    boen
  • Hi Ben,

    Good to know the guide and the information here have been useful :O)

    Generally, only 2 things might be causing the issues you are experiencing :
    1) VPS is slow : Not enough ram, not enough processing power, lousy VPS provider, etc etc.
    2) Connectivity to your VPS is slow : Due to distance, ISP latency issues, VPS provider connectivity speed issues, etc etc.

    There are just too many factors that's not within our control. However, if you want, you can consider upgrading your VPS to boost it's performance and/or relocating it to a VPS provider that's nearer to you to see if it helps.

    I'm assuming that you went with the VPS solution because you wanted to trade remotely from different locations, and having the trading platform on your VPS removes the need to install it on multiple computers. As far as I'm aware, most people use a VPS to trade because they need the 24x7 uptime for their EAs to run. If you do not need to run any EAs that require 24x7 uptime, you might want to consider trading with your home computer that's connected to your DSL/Cable, and access it remotely using free software such as www.LogMeIn.com.

    LogMeIn is excellent for remote access, and the speed is very good. Using your home computer will also mean that your trading machine's performance should not be an issue. And since it's located near you (within the country), connectivity issues or slowness is minimised.

    Try using your home computer and LogMeIn and see how it goes. Who knows, you may not even need a VPS in the first place.

    Let me know if the above helps.

    Hello,

    Thanks for the help I found here. My VPS, restart to fresh-up the VPS daily, automatically loading of the different programs work all fine!!!

    I experience another problem, for which I can not find a solution. I hear the lot of people use VPS to trade in the Forex market but I found it to be awful slow to work with.
    I have VPSLand and if Itrade Forex with it I have to decide quickly on most trades, whether stepping in or out.
    Normally my brains are the slow part, but now it's the computer (or internet, or VPSLand) who take loads of time to do what I ask them to do. In my local computer I connect through DSL/Cable and that connection is fast. For VPS I use the same.

    Is there a remedy for this nuisance?
    I was thinking of using a tunneler, like Metropipe. using such proxy, wouldn't I gain in speed?
    Or are there other solutions, free of costs?

    Thanks and Best Regards,

    Ben
  • @Jwon : go for a dedicated server, or pump up your VPS Ram gradually while you add additional MT4 instances. monitor your VPS memory resources closely in case it max out and you loose access to it.

    @Alex : consider CNS (http://commercialnetworkservices.com/VPS/Window...)

    ckowyong,
    thanks for the VPS Guide. It's been great help. Even though I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on computers I learned a lot from the manual and this Q&A page.

    As for Xavier's question about entering the password. I configured my .RDP file so that when I login from my home computer I don't have to enter the login and password, it logs me in automatically. But I have another .RDP file so that when I login from work or other computer it always ask for login and password.

    I use VPS Land now but I'm planning to move to another VPS. I could not login one day and it took them 10 hours to respond. The next day my password stopped working and they took 5 hours to change the password while I had open trades. I'm going to make sure the new VPS provider includes a phone support, not only email support.

    Hi CK,
    Thanks for your guide. I have a inquiry. Hope that you can help. I intend to install 10 MT4 with 4 pair each using EA. What is your recommendation in order to place all these 10 account in one place. Any vps package suggestion from swvps or other vendor?

    Thanks

    Looks a bit like dedayo is missing the spaces in the command,
    should be 234 then space then /console
    Maybe it's just bad on screen formating?
  • @GS : "admin" and "console" mode are essentially the same, the former is for Vista/XP_SP3, and later for XP_SP1&2/2000.

    @stijn : thanks for the advise. yes, CNS is good... one of the best in my opinion.

    Hello,

    I cannot use RTS v6 to log on to my VPS.each time i add d necessary info 2 my RTS,any attempt to log on via console doesn't work.Whenever i try to put on RTS frm Desktop i discover that all d info added are no longer there.I've repeated this about 3X and still get thesame result.
    What do i do?
    Also i tried to create a short cut frm my desktop using vps guide for mt4.Uder type the location of the item:mstsc.exe/v:96.9.170.234/console.It gives back this response: The file C:/mstsc.exe/v:96.9.170.234/console cannot be found.
    What is d problem in d 2 instances.

    Hi all,

    I have found SWVPS to be a pain in the @ss (excuse my language :-) when it comes to reliability and speed (what quick support?). Had major issues logging in (being blocked entirely) even though, yes..., is WAS only using the console type of login.

    I've finally found a providor with the right speed, running like a charm: a Virtual Private Desktop (not: "server") from CNS (see http://www.commercialnetworkservices.com ).
    Stop the hassle with registry settings or system32-deletions. We should be concentrating on other stuff IMHO (namely managing trades).

    Anyway, I like it a lot (nope, I do not get paid for this promotion)

    Furthermore, I use Royal TS (http://www.code4ward.net/main/) for smooth connection. Great to work with.

    Success to you all!

    Hi

    I have replaced 'console' in my shortcut with 'admin' as per the comments in April 09 which I only saw after my previous posting.

    My VPS now works properly. Thanks

    One question following the above - if i now log in with admin instead of console, are there any other potential consequences?

    Thanks

    Hi

    Thank you very much for the guide CK.

    I have the same query as Brendan (16 Feb 08), ie with the daily restart. I am using swvps and I followed the guide and got everything to work but the MT4 session boot up after 30 seconds after I manually log in, and not automatically after the daily restart.

    Please let me know how you helped with Brendan's query?

    My shortcut read like this:

    C:\Windows\system32\mstsc.exe /v:aa.bbb.ccc.ddd /console

    I have tried to delete the C:\Windows\system32\
    to make it the same as the guide, however it front bit gets added on automatically.

    Can it be that my password is to long, ie 17 characters?

    Can anyone help?
  • @Xavier :

    you said "Each time I have to manually enter the password."

    that is correct! each time you connect to your VPS, you ARE expected to enter your username and password. but that does not mean that the autologin is not working or have not take place.

    i'm going to pause here and let you think about it for a little while if you don;t mind.

    CK

    Thank you for this quick and precise answer.

    The problem is that although I followed the guide precisely, my VPS doesn't log in using the admin username and password that is set into the registry/
    Each time I have to manually enter the password.
    Sorry I wasn't clearer in my previous message. My English is not great.
    Regards,

    Xavier
  • @Xavier : whenever you connect to your VPS from your computer, you WILL ALWAYS GET the password screen. what you should see once you get past that login screen is your MT4 platform already running and trading. if you see that, you are fine.

    if you followed the guide, you would have configured your VPS to do the following AUTOMATICALLY if and when a reboot occurs, be it executed by yourself or from a power outage or by your VPS provider without your knowledge :
    (after a reboot, your VPS will do the following which is NOT visible to you) :
    - log in using the admin username and password that is set into the registry
    - run the start.cmd file that invokes your MT4 platform(s)

    so when you connect to your VPS from your computer, you WILL GET the password screen. once in, you should see your MT4 platform(s) ALREADY running.

    let me know if the above helps.

    ck :O)

    Hello CK

    Please just a short question, base on your VPS Guide for MT4 :
    I bought my VPS with VPSLand, but there is no way to make the VPS start without getting the window for password. I tried many time he hardcoding, but without success. Would you have a fix for that ?

    Thank you so much if you can answer.

    Best regards,

    Xavier

    PS I also have a VPS with SWPS, and there was no problems…
  • @Brendan : sorry mate, i don't have an answer for you. i hope the others reading this can help.

    @Anthonio : yeap, just install once on your PC (nothing to be installed on VPS). just follow the steps in the appendum A.

    Hello all-

    I am using vista and using the original shortcut with the /console to access my vps. How do I know that i am indeed connected via console mode? i tried to use /admin and it wouldn't connect that way. thanks in advance!

    Brendan
  • Choi Chin,

    for VPSLAND, you may have received this link when you registered :

    PLESK INFORMATION:
    ===================
    URL: https://64.22.126.204:8443
    Login name: admin
    Password: setup

    You can use that URL to restart your VPS. Alternatively, log a support ticket with them and request for a reboot. This clears off all unnecessary sessions or programs that could be eating up the resources, preventing you from logging in.

    Once that's settled, we can then focus on how to avoid such a situation from happening again.

    It had been about a week I unable to to connect to my remote desktop of the vps. I signed up the vps plan with VPSland. I tried using different computers to access the remote desktop but failed all together. My first month subscription had been good but not now.
    Anyone has the same experience as mine with VPSland? I'm lost now as I unable to go into the server to change my setting of EA. Really sweat!

    Thanks

    Yes! It did work. That's great! I've now updated the connection shortcut as you suggest, so will see what happens after the weekend. Many thanks indeed for solving the problem.
  • Alex
    If the command i told you to use in the run start menu worked then you can enter this command below in the shortcut you created to connect to your vps :
    %SystemRoot%\system32\mstsc.exe /v:00.000.000.000 /admin
    right clic on the shortcut, properties and enter the command in the first field
  • Mervyn
    OK Alex, I'll try what you suggest tomorrow morning after the overnight restart.

    Many thanks,

    Mervyn
  • alex
    Yes it's because you probably connect using the /console command
    Try with the /admin from the run window (start menu)
    use this command :
    mstsc.exe /v:00.000.149.156 /admin
    where 00.000.149.156 is your vps ip
  • Mervyn
    Thanks for your reply Alex.

    Could you explain the logic, please? Not being a computer whiz I don't understand how making this change in the connection icon on my PC affects the start.cmd file in the StartUp folder on the VPS.

    The start.cmd file is not executing when the VPS has been restarted. It only starts when I open the console to view the VPS desktop. And that could be several hours after the restart. Not good.

    Best wishes,

    Mervyn.
  • alex
    I had the exact same issue
    You need to use the command below to connect if you have windows pack 3 installed
    mstsc.exe /v:00.000.149.156 /admin
    with pack1 and 2 we could use
    mstsc.exe /v:78.129.149.156 /console
    Try to use the first command you'll be ok i guess

    Hi CK,

    Many thanks for your VPS guide which has helped tremendously. The only remaining problem I have is the same as Brandon above:

    \"The vps will restart as scheduled but when I log back in from my base PC the MT4 session is not up. It is failing to boot up with the VPS restart. But it does start up 30 seconds after I log back in from my base PC.

    Does anyone know where I might look to fix this perhaps?\"

    In my case the black DOS window is on screen and commences the start up procedure as I open up the console. Do you have an answer for this? I can\'t see one on the blog.

    Best wishes,

    Mervyn.

    Hello Alex,

    The difference is the data centers. The special is $20 usd for service from the UK data canter 99.9% uptime. The least expensive package would be the PA location however, they are not as reliable as the UK.(99.6% uptime) There is a third option which is loacated in LA which is a few bucks cheaper and from what I hear is just as reliable as the UK location as 99.9% uptime.

    setting up email service from within your VPS

    After some research & experimenting I finally discovered how easy it is to set up your own SMTP server inside your VPS that then sends out email from your EAs to your own mail account. This document describes the basics:
    http://www.arialsoftware.com/SetupSMTPServer.htm
    All WINDOWS server 2003 have the smtp module build it (also SWVPS of course).
    It is important to allow access and relay for only the own (= the IP address of the VPS server) IP while configuring the SMTP module. After configuring, you have to rightclick on the smtp server name and click START.

    Thereafter go to help and find description of how to set the smtp module to automatic startup.

    In Metatrader > options > email tab you enter your VPS IP address into the smtp server field, nothing else! smtp login and password are left empty. Into the FROM field you can put anything that has mail format: abc@abc.com. In TO you put your actual working email address that you want the message to be delivered to. Voilà.

    Some mobile phone operators (like vodafone) offer free notification by SMS when new mail arrives in their accounts, so it makes sense to check with your operator if they offer this too. If so, set up a mail account with them, and your EA can talk to your cell for free.

    CK,

    Finally got the fix on this console business. Support at SWVPS has been awesome and they have their own program that runs on their server that ensures you are running your platform in console mode. Here is a copy of the reply I received from support:

    1. Download http://support.swvps.com/swvps.exe onto your VPS and run it.
    2. Enter a password for the console user as requested and complete the installation.
    3. Reboot the VPS once finished
    4. Put a shortcut of your software into the swvps folder on the desktop.
    5. Reboot the VPS and the software will auto start under the console user.
    6. Open task manager by right clicking on the task bar and under the Users tab, right click on the console user and select connect.
    7. To exit the console session, open the task manager and select connect again to the Administrator user. You can logoff from the VPS.

    The software will remain running under the console user and whatever shortcuts are in the swvps folder will auto start upon reboot.

    ~~~~~~
    Not sure if this will work on any VPS but in case you or anyone else decides to go with WSVPS, this will save a lot of leg work getting this console setup.
    Hi all,
    I don't trade with IBFX, I trade with Alpari (UK). Every time the cmd is runing and... "Window can not find 'C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4\terminal.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly and try again..."
    Please show me step by step how to do to reopen my Alpari MT4 when cmd running ?
    Thank you.
    Hello Peter,
    Thanks for the heads-up. I installed Royal TS and logged into my VPS via console mode however, my MT4 platform was loading the wrong account and my EA kept saying that I have the wrong account information. (??)
    I then exit out of the MT4 and logged in my VPS via Vista's Remote Desktop and my MT4 was running. I clicked on the bottom taskbar and clicked on Task Manager and there was only one instance of the platform running. I think as long as I check the task manager for more than one precess, I should be ok.
    Thank again! :)
    Hi Jim,
    most probably, you are not logging in in console mode, so the apps are starting because it is a "second" instance (while in the background the other MT4s are already running.)All a bit confusing. To remedy this: use ROYAL TS ( a free utility from Australia, Version 1.4.4 is stable, get it from www.code4ward) to log on. If you set this to log on in console mode it works. You cannot transfer files with ROYAL though. If you want to do this, you still have to use WINDOWS Remote Desktop (RDP). In order to make sure you are logging on in console mode with this, you have to locate your RDP file (the first time you use RDP save the settings > then you get this file), and add the following line (use notepad or editor):
    connect to console:i:1
    exactly like that. (The above applies to WIN XP SP2 -dont know about Vista). That´s the secret, took me months till I came across it in some forum.
    Good luck
    Hello CK.
    I have been with SWVPS for about two weeks and the only major hiccup on their end was last Thursday when their container failed and the sever was down for about three hours. To remidy the connection issue, they removed a recent Windows update and remove Virtuozzo software before I could access my VPS.
    Everything else seems to be operating fine. There is one thing I cannot gat a handle on and that is the auto-startup of my MT4. I still have to log into my VPS and only then will my MT4 auto load. Any suggestions? :)
    Hi CK,
    First of all, thank you very much for the wonderful job you have done. I signed up the vpsland ($18/month) few days ago and setup properly to run the MT4 in the vps.
    However, I found that the remote desktop connection always give me problem. I found it very difficult to get access or connected to my vps. Sometimes only out of luck I able to access into it. I tried it with my notebook, my office's PC and home PC as well. The problem still the remains.
    May I know this is due to what probelm? Is it the VPSland's server slow down or uptime problem? Did you encounter such problem with SWVPS?
    I need advice in this. Are there any other VPS plans that are more reliable?
    I very appreciate your reply. Thank you.
    Hi ckowyong ,
    Thanks for your VPS guide,but I have a problem with start. cmd .I dont know how to configure it with Sigtrader exe.How to change it so it refer to my sigtrader exe. terminal.Thanks in advance.
    Ckowyong,
    Thanks for the reply! :) The auto-logon configuration does work on Vista. It’s the Auto startup of MT4 in my VPS that is the issue. Once the VPS reboots, the “auto startup” .cmd script does not initiate until I log into the VPS. The platform start just fine when I place the path directly into the startup folder however, there is no 30 second delay. Could that be a problem?
    One more quick question regarding console. If I log into my VPS as outlined in your guide using the Remote Desktop, am I logging into my VPS in console mode?
    Thanks again for your input and awesome guide! I really appreciate it!!
    Regards,
  • @Karl : VPS is not meant for sharing using several accounts. you should be looking at getting a dedicated server for your needs.
    @Pipsahoy : thanks for the excellent script!! :O) renaming the terminal.exe to terminal1.exe does make it easier to check which copy is running and which is not. great idea! :O)
    @Al : seems like a VPS issue. you will need to contact your VPS provider to get support. if all else fails, get a refund and move over to CommercialNetworkServices.com
    @Jim : sounds like the AutoLogin configuration did not work on your Vista machine. the following 2 links should have all the information you need.... just have to get hands dirty :
    I have set up my VPS to reboot at a specific time and configured it to delay auto start my Forex trading platform. (30 second delay to be exact) All preliminary tests checked ok however, when the server reboots and goes “offline,” I wait approximately 3-5 minutes before I log back into my VPS using Vista’s Remote Desktop Connection and every time I log into my VPS, only at that time does my Forex trading platform load after 30 seconds. My objective in setting up the server this way was to have my trading platform automatically restarted in the event that the server went down for maintenance or some other occurrence that would require a reboot of the server. Plus, I would prefer that the server be rebooted from time to time just to keep the system clean.
    Any input to rectify this issue will be greatly appreciated.
    I am running several EA's on a Virtual Server.
    The MT4 platforms are disconnecting and I have to reconnect. They do not disconnect on the desktop. I wonder if it is a server problem?
    Has anyone experienced this problem?
    After a few disconnects they remain connected unfortunately the MT4 will not reconnect on its own.
    I really appreciate the information provided by CK
    Hi, Thank you for writing the 2 pdf instructions for using VPS for metatrader, after reading your helpful instructions I was able to get my 2 live and 2 demo metatrder accounts running at VPSLand, and they run fine on the 32bit $18 per month service. Here I paste a cmd file that I use to ensure that only 1 instance of each metatrader is running at boottime, this is named alwaysrunning.cmd and is in the startup folder. In order for this to work I have to rename each terminal.exe so that they each have a different name; terminal1.exe, terminal2.exe, etc.
    Hi bobby thom,
    you don´t need PLESK to run Metatrader or manage your VPS. This is done through the VIRTUOZZO Power Panel which is automatically provided to you with the VPS.
    If you´re already running PLESK, then delete it cause it takes up unnecessary memory space.
    Hi Chowyong,
    I have a vps using windows server 2003. I want to install MT4 in that server, after install, i have created several user accounts. So each user account will have its own MT4 session. How can i do that ?
    My Situation now, if i have 5 users connecting to my VPS, they will have my session meaning once they open MT, they can see my account... how can i make that each users in my server have their own MT account ?
    Thanks
    Hi All
    Thank you for your previous assistance which solved the problem. However now I have made another problem for myself. I have used the RDP method as outlined below. it works great, BUT now I have my previous Console short cut attached to the RDP connection. Now I can only connect via the RDP and no matter what I do I cannot get the VPS to release the RDP connection apart from Restarting the VPS.
    Can any body tell me how to break the Link between the previous working Console short cut and this RDP connection. I have tried the obvious and deleted and re-installed the console short cut but the link is maintained. I have tried Logging out via the RDP Help instructions etc etc.
    I keep watching and refreshing the Paralells panel and can see the multiple connections and the non disconnect.
    Once again any assistance would be appreciated, as this non disconnection has already caused an EA to double trade.
    Hi CK,
    I have just been introduced to VPS and trying to read up as much as i can on it. I found your guide and Blog EXTREMELY helpful.
    I still have one little curiosity though; If after configuring the vps on my computer, i have reason to change it, would i need to go through the entire config process again with a new one? Also, can i access my vps from any other computer?
  • Scott
    Thanks for the suggestion Barry. Should it look like this:
    Computer: aa.bb.ccc.ddd/password
    Should I also check the box that says \"Allow me to save credentials\"?
  • barry
    Correction:
    I posted above that I had 700 Megs of Disk space at SWVPS. That is incorrect; I have following on $18/monthly VPS:
    -- Memory: 700 MB
    -- Disk Space: 10 GB
    -- Bandwidth: 350 GB
  • barry
    Scott,
    The following might work for you regarding logging in automatically:
    Setup "Remote Desktop Connection" for purposes of saving your user name & pasword only. You will use your other Desktop connection in future for Logon in Console mode.
    Start -->Programs -->Accessories -->Remote Desktop Connection, add your your server IP address for "Computer," then your password -- you can do this and save in options as I posted above. Logon to make sure you entered all info correctly. Exit the server, then logon using your Desktop Console Icon, it should log you on automatically. It works for me.
    barry
  • Scott
    Thanks again for all your help Barry!!! Do I have to manually change the rem line above or will this change automatically? I was assuming I only need to add the new Start command, but I just wanted to be sure.
  • barry
    Scott,
    Yes, you can set up the VPS so more than one MT4 account starts up automatically when you logon. You add the path, in start.cmd, to the MT4 account in Program Files the same as you add the first. You can add to start.cmd by temporarily changing the file to start.txt, then back to start.cmd after you save your changes. This is basically for after the server is rebooted because as long as you leave the Meta4s on , they will already be on when you login anyway. This is how my four (4) Meta4 accounts look in the start.cmd file:
    rem **********************************************************************************
    rem *** This starts IBFX, FastFX Trader, FXPro MetaTrader & MetaTrader 4 at FOREX.com after waiting 30 seconds ***
    rem***********************************************************************************
    ping localhost -n 30
    start "1" "C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4 FAPTurbo1\terminal.exe"
    Start "2" "C:\Program Files\MetaTrader 4 at FOREX.com\terminal.exe"
    start "3" "C:\Program Files\FastBrokers_FastFX Trader\terminal.exe"
    Start "4" "C:\Program Files\FxPro MetaTrader\terminal.exe"
    exit
  • Scott
    Another question I meant to ask: Can you set up the VPS so more than one MT4 account starts up automatcially when you logon? If so, how?
    Hello, and happy new year, I am trying to set up VPS and get stopped out at entering the
  • barry
    Scott,
    I'm with SWVPS. Maybe VPSLand support can advise you on how to setup automatic login.
  • Scott
    Thanks for the help CK and Barry. Now that I know I have to login manually to get to my server, this makes more sense. Barry, I tried your suggestion, but when I clicked on the options box on the logon dialog box, I didn't get an Edit option. It only gave me one more option which I could not click and that was Shut Down. I didn't get an Edit button option selection. This is with VPSLand, if that makes any difference.
  • barry
    Scott,
    Use "options" on your logon dialog box and save your credentials (user name and pasword) by clicking on edit, then add info and click OK. I logon automatically when I login from the Desktop Icon. I exit the server and use my Desktop Icon, When my session timeout, to reconnect to the server. Automatically is faster for me.
    barry
  • Scott,
    yes. when you click on the Remote Desktop icon on your computer to connect to your VPS, you will ALWAYS need to enter your username and password. the important thing to note is that your MT4 should ALREADY BE RUNNING once you see your desktop after logging in.
    Do I always have to manually log in when i first start the remote deskstop to get into the VPS or should it log me in automatically??
  • Scott
    I have tried all of your recommendations above and I still get stopped on the LOGON screen. My password is encoded correctly and saved, I\'ve tried it with both console and admin, I\'ve checked to make sure the spaces are correct, and I\'ve rebooted my VPS. I till have to manually enter by password instead of going to automatic logon. Any other suggestions?
    Hi Mike,
    I forgot to add that you are activating the start.cmd now when you logon to the server because your login is in Terminal mode instead of Console mode. Setup your connection as instructed above and your Desktop Icon will connect you to your server in Console mode.
    I'm currently running 3 different Metatrader4s from 3 different brokers without any problems. I have 700 Megs of Disk Space from SWVPS, and is using less than 200 Megs, so I have over 500 Megs free.
    All the best.
    Hi Mike,
    Your having the same problem some of us here had. Setup your shortcut using the instructions in Peter and I posts above. Also, right click on your PC and select shortcut to create your connection instead of using Windows Remote Desktop. And make sure you watch the spaces as I noted above. That did it for me after a week of futility.
    Good Luck and Happy Holidays to All!!!
    Hi Mike,
    I had the same problem.
    The solution for me was login via remote desktop with the command
    mstsc.exe /v:aa.b.ccc.ddd /admin
    instead of
    mstsc.exe /v:aa.b.ccc.ddd /console
    With WinXP SP3 the /console has become /admin
    I am having problems getting MT4 to restart after the VPS restarts. This is on XP Sp3 at SWVPS. Both the Restart command and the start.cmd work as they should when clicked. The VPS shuts down as scheduled but the MT4 does not restart. When I reconnect (via console) to the VPS the start.cmd starts pinging and starts the MT4. I have checked and rechecked the Registry settings and they are correct.
    Can anybody give some guidance, it would be greatly appreciated as this has driven me nuts for the last week
    Thanks
  • barry
    I found and corrected my problem. For those that might encounter the same problem, spaces not included in the command was the culprit of my anxiety:
    mstsc.exe /v:aa.b.ccc.ddd /admin
    Note Spaces: mstsc.exe (1 space)/v:aa.b.ccc.ddd (1 space)/admin
    Note: aa.b.ccc.ddd represents VPS IP.
    When you right click on Desktop icon and select Properties, the command
    in the target box should look like following:
    %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe /v:aa.b.ccc.ddd /admin
    Hi,
    I have a problem setting up the console shortcut on my PC's desktop. I can logon to my VPS using Windows "Remote Desktop" but this is in terminal mode, and causes a new startup after I reboot the VPS. I've tried both commands below:
    1. mstsc.exe/v:aa.b.ccc.ddd/admin
    2. mstsc.exe/v:aa.b.ccc.ddd/console
    Note: In this post only, aa.b.ccc.ddd represents my VPS's IP address.
    This is the error messages that I get:
    1. The file C:\mstsc.exe/v:aa.b.ccc.ddd/admin cannot be found.
    2. The file C:\mstsc.exe/v:aa.b.ccc.ddd/console cannot be found.
    I'm using:
    VPS: Windows Server 2003 w/SWVPS Host
    Yes, I am using XP with the new service pack and I did try what you said and it did work. Thanks for letting me know how to fix the problem.
  • Mark
    Hi Arron,
    I had exactly the same problem. If you are using XP with the new service pack change the shorcut command from "/ console" to " / admin"
    I did this and all is working fine now. You may need to reboot your VPS as you could be running multiple versions of MT4, as you are logging on in teminal mode so each time you log in it starts a new session.
    Your main (admin) session will still be running but you will not be able to see it until you use the / admin command.
    Hope this helps
    Hi CK,
    Thank you so much for your great tutorial. This was a REAL help!
    I am faced with just one issue: I am now on a VPS with SWVPS.COM. Working great. But the auto-log on is not working properly.
    - I did merge the reg_update.reg file into the VPS-registry
    - I did change the administrator password into the registry to its correct setting. I checked it after a restart (to make sure it is saved correctly).
    However, when restarting the VPS, the VPS stops at the LOGON screen. So NO automatic logon. What to do? May this have to do with new security settings from swvps.com ?
    Thanks!
    ( By the way: after logging on by hand, the start.cmd file runs ok: pinging for 30 secs, then MT4 starts up as it should.)
  • Aaron
    I am using swvps. I followed your instructions exactly yet when the server is rebooted via scheduled tasks the start.cmd file does not run until I log on. I am in console mode and when I click on the start.cmd file manually it does execute properly. How do I fix this? Thanks.
    5. What is the rate for that ?
  • ** How to auto-publish a DETAILED REPORT to a website? **
    by default, MT4 will only auto-publish the simple statement instead of the detailed statement. to fool MT4 into auto-publishing the detailed statement, you just need to do the following :
    (assuming you use IBFX)
    1. go to the C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4\templates directory
    2. look for a file called "statement.htm" and rename to "statement_original.htm"
    3. next, find the file called "StatementDetailed.htm" and make a copy of it, naming it "statement.htm"
    there you have it! :O) the default report generated by MT4 will now be a Detailed Statement with the balance chart and detailed account information.
  • hi Abdallah,
    you need to do the "VPS Guide" first AND THEN "Appendum A" to get a proper setup.
    hi Peter,
    most VPS service providers will have their own intrusion detection systems. i think the best thing to do is to be really careful about visiting websites from within your VPS. once a trojan or spyware gets into your VPS, that's when it becomes vulnerable to attacks. otherwise, attackers should not know how to get to your VPS in the first place.
  • Peter
    a word of warning and call for programming help
    A German VPS operator told me that VPS do get hacked from time to time, by script kiddies who use these VPS as relay stations for file sharing. There is no really effective countermeasure against this, other than scanning for unusual high volume traffic patterns which they routinely do. Also, you cannot install an alternative firewall because of the VPS architecture. One customer logged and reported a brute force attack of 48 logon efforts PER SECOND.
    If somebody knows a programmer who could program something like an "intrusion trap", this could really be helpful. Like a small utility that starts recording file alterations unless deactivated by a keyboard shortcut upon entering from outside. That could also backtrack and record the intruders IP address, and maybe even send an email.
    should I use your VPS guide for MT4 to install my vps or using the Appendum_A is quite enough for installation ?
    Thanks
  • hi Lee,
    after clicking on the [X] for your VPS, you would have essentially DISCONNECTED your computer from your VPS (your VPS continues to run at the service provider's computer center)
    from that point onwards (after you are disconnected), everything you do to your computer will not affect the VPS. you can shut down, reboot, send it in for repair, or run it over with a car .... your VPS and MT4 will remain running as you have left it.
    just remember to keep your IP address and password somewhere so that when you need to, you can always configure another PC with the necessary "CONSOLE" shortcut to access your VPS.
    hope this helps.
    ck :O)
    Hello ckowyong
    I will just click on the X button on the top-right hand corner of the VPS window.
    I know that my MT4 software will continue to run on the VPS.
    When I want to turn my computer off ,I will turn off VPS window and my computer.
    Will my MT 4 software still run?
    Should I NEVER turn my computer off to run my MT 4 software
    Thanks Peter,
    I was prompted to ask the question because when I logged on this morning to SWVPS (approx 0700GMT) I was greeted with the 'startup' screen, which was timed to execute at approx 0116 GMT. The 0116 startup was recorded in Status Changes, but not the 0700 one. That's why I wondered whether there was a independent program (not run by the VPS) which would monitor up and down times.
  • Peter
    re: up and down times
    Don´t know about other VPS providers, but the ones running VIRTUOZZO (like VPSLand) have an item called STATUS CHANGES on the left side bar of the management console. There you have a complete log of all the up & down times.
    You have to ask your provider for the URL of the management console which is a different one from the subscription management page.
  • hi Colin,
    i have been looking for one too. it would be a really useful tool indeed.
    hi Lee,
    your computer can be XP or VIsta or even Windows 2000.... it does not matter.
    what SWVPS mean is that the VPS that they offer is using Windows 2003... that's all. no issues whatsoever.
    ck
  • Colin
    Can anyone recommend an independent monitor that will sit in the VPS and record up & down times?
  • YOUNGSU LEE
    Dear ckowyong
    Cencerning the window Operation System of vps, I have a question.
    I've used a window XP on computer. but I saw that the swvps site recommend a window 2003 version of computer OS.
    I wonder if I can use a window XP version.
    Thanks in advance.
  • hi Peter,
    thanks for sharing the tip. i am surprised that your VPS got attacked. i may need to look into this issue and see how best to protect the VPS....
    hi EliMarc,
    i do not have the answer to that question now. but one thing for sure... do not use the web browser in your VPS if you can avoid it.
    if you are considering any anti-virus or firewall, make sure that you have the RAM and CPU capacity to run it.
    hi Chuanci,
    SWVPS does not provide any SMTP server. if you are trying to configure the email feature in the EA, you will need to have an email account with an ISP or email provider that supports this. contact your email provider for assistance.
    ck
    Does anyone know the SMTP Server address for SWVPS?
    After a reported DDOS attack on my VPS I decided to install and use LogonExpert, just in case (so the logon password is no longer stored openly in the registry). For anybody that is going to use this: you have to set a logon delay (within LogonExpert) of 60 sec.
  • Daud's got a good writeup on his blog regarding how to detect duplicate MT4 instances in a VPS : http://ydaudw.blogspot.com/search/label/VPS
    if you are seeing trades happening even though you have disabled or removed your EA, it's likely that you have another MT4 instance running in the background. read Daud's blog to find out how to check if this is the case.
  • hi Mark,
    if you are running it as a service, you might wanna enable this option in the service property setting : "Allow service to interact with desktop".
    There is a small problem I have with one of the autostart MT4 platforms: one of them doesn´t login automatically although SAVE ACCOUNT INFO is checked. The others do, but not this one, strange. Anybody know how to correct this?
  • Hi Peter,
    Am using the latest version 11.20. According to website it support on Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Server 2003, and 64-bit versions of Windows for x64 and IA64 processors, and Windows Vista.
    Hi Daud,
    excellent idea using ProcessExplorer. I have been running it on my computer without problems, but when trying to run it on my vps I get: Dbghelp.dll doesn´t support WIN Symbol Server. Install MS Debugging tools for WIN.
    So far so good but I have to know which processor the vps is using to download the correct version. Which version did you take?
  • hi Peter,
    I use Process Explorer to check if there are any other MetaTrader active in other session. Check below picture, there are Red & Blue box which identify there are 2 session active.
    terminal.exe is our MetaTrader. If you found there are 2 terminal.exe process active then you can terminate 1 of them.
    You can download ProcessExplorer free from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals...
    Could somebody please explain why it makes sense to protect your auto-logon password through an additional app like \"logon expert\" mentionned above? If someone were to hack the server, my Windows would be up, running and open anyway. Or is it because the Windows Administrator logon password is the same as the VPS server (Remote Desktop) login??
    And if I d use \"logon expert\" would I still go through the process described by CK (apply registry patch etc), or would there be changes?
  • hi Peter,
    there's no easy way to tell when you are not in CONSOLE mode. and because this is very important, i have written an important appendum to the original guide that addresses this rather critical issue. please find the appendum here : http://ckowyong.com/blog/?page_id=20
    ck
  • Peter
    Thanks, CK. Just one further question:
    after I am logged into my VPS, is there a way to determine if I am logged on in console mode or logged in normally?
    Because the screens seem to look alike whether I log in through your described shortcut and logged in through the normal Remote Desktop login?
  • hehe... just Googled it and found this command line that works with Windows XP :
    "rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation"
    got to test it out later in a CMD file on my VPS to ensure it works. this should make the VPS a little more secure.
    ck
  • hi Peter,
    if you open the .reg file in NotePad, you will see the following lines :
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "AutoAdminLogon"="1"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "DefaultPassword"="enter_administrator_password_here"
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "DefaultUserName"="Administrator"
    what the 3 lines does are (in the order as they appear above) :
    1) configures the system to allow automatic logon in by administrators
    2) hard-code the administrator's password into the registry for use in the auto-logon process
    3) sets the default username to "Administrator" so that the auto-logon will use this account and the password in (2) in the auto-logon process.
    ideally, i should have a script to LOCK the workstation after it launches all the MT4 instances as a security measure. will likely issue an appendum to the manual once i figure that one out. if anyone has any idea, please do contribute.
    thanks!
  • hi ck,
    I'm also with SWVPS for almost 5 months now, had no issue with them. I found 2 companies customizing their VPS for online trader:
    http://www.commercialnetworkservices.com/VPS/Wi...
    ww
    http://www.pandanaran.com/vpstrader.php (Indonesia language)
    Unfortunately, we need to pay more for this customization VPS which a bit expensive at least for me. They said, with traditional server it may reboot at any off-peak time. For this reason they create and customize their VPS purely for online trading.
    Any opinion?
  • nice sharing Jon :O) thanks!
    hi Daud,
    i'm still with SWVPS, but have dropped VPSLAND. i stayed with SWVPS purely because they are cheaper. it's hard to recommend a VPS provider these days as they all seem to boast reliability figures, but have difficulty upholding them. there have been some complaints about SWVPS lately, but personally, i've not had any issues with them since Oct 2007.
    Dear CK,
    I want to share with you and the blog's community, some problems that I am facing with vpsland.
    I admit first that I am not technically sound, and that the problems might be associated with this reason. I therefore request any suggestion/help from you.
    The problem: for at least 3 occurances, I was not able to access my vps due to reasons (unknown for me). VPSLand were restoring the service for me. One time with complete re-install of the vps.
    Today I had same problem, and when I complained, I received the below explanation from vpsland.
    Could you please explain to me what are these issues, how they happen and advise how to avoid such issues?
    Many thanks in advance
    sounds like your company's firewall is not allowing you to use Plesk. and without admin rights to your own machine to install any 3rd party software like LOGMEIN, i must admit that i do not have a solution for you.
    however, if all you need is to OBSERVE the trades at the office (instead of controlling them), you can read this post for an alternative way to achieve that :
    Thanks for your reply
    This blog is extremely helpful
    I will go for the upgrade...
    But before that, please answer the following question:
    If I upgrade and get Plesk Control Panel, would I be able to access my VPS through https://75.127.--.--:----??
    knowing that when I click on this (https:...) I am getting now the following error message:
    Error Code: 502 Proxy Error. The specified Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) port is not allowed. ISA Server is not configured to allow SSL requests from this port. Most Web browsers use port 443 for SSL requests. (12204)
    Awaiting your answer
    Thanks in advance
  • hi EliMarc,
    yes... what VPSLand offered when i signed up back in Aug 07 was PLESK... and it was free. from what you said, seems like they have revised their packages now. i am no longer with them since Feb 08.
    SWVPS calls it Virtuozzo Control Panel before.... and it does allow file upload and reboots. they seem to call it PLESK now too... and are charging $6.95 p.m. for it now for new subscribers.
    hope that helps - ck
    A question to mynor and CK
    Hi,
    In your April 8 comment, you mentioned that "vpsland gave the facility to control the VPS through the web.They caledd it VZPP control panel From this web i can restart my VPS ,upload file and other facility..."
    Can you explore this point? is this same as Plesk control panel?
    I purchased Lite Plan but when I asked about web connection I got the following reply from vpsland support:
    "We do not provide plesk control panel with lite vps, hence you are not able to access the url:- https://75.127.---.---:----
    If you wish to have plesk control panel, then you have to upgrade your server to next available plan"
    Thanks in advance
  • hi Jimmy,
    if you run your EAs on a VPS (virtual machine) that's located at the service provider, you will not need to keep your computer running. your EA will continue to run on the VPS as it's not dependent on your home PC.
    hope that helps.
    Hi CK
    I am very new to this EA n VPS thing, would like to know once installed, must I need to let my home PC running 24hr or I can simply shut down?
    Thanks
  • hi mark,
    it's my pleasure :O) i'm really happy to know that it has been useful to others :O)
    regarding 64-bit, it will only make sense if MetaQuotes announces that they have a 64-bit version of MT4 that runs better than the existing 32-bit version on a 32-bit machine. else, i'll stick with the normal 32-bit packages for now.
    from my experience with VPSLAND and SWVPS, the basic package should be able to run 4 instances of MT4 without much issues, assuming that each is trading 2 pairs(ie. 8 pairs in total). but that said, it also depends on the way the EA is written. complex ones will require a lot of processing power and RAM, and so does those that re-evaluates that charts on every tick movement on the pairs. i'll suggest that you put on 2 EAs first and monitor the RAM usage on the VPS Control Panel for at least a day before adding more. try not to utilise over 80% of the RAM to be safe.
    with EAs like SHARK and GRIFFIN, 4 should not be a problem. with monsters like STEINITZ's, i would estimate 2 is the max if you ran it on 12 pairs each.
    hope the above helps.
    ck
    ps : the links above are not affiliate links... so feel free to click on them! :O)
    Hi CK,
    Thank you for your wonderful free gift on the server user guide. The word is spreading fast. Anyway, thank you very much.
    Quick question, the vpsland is offering 64 bit and 32 bit vps for the same price. Which one to choose for running mt4 application?
    If I choose the cheapest vps with 256 mb ram, what is the maximum ea i could run at any given time?
    Thanks again.
    Hi CK
    Thanks for the wonderful work done thru the vps guide. It's really excellent.
    Also thanks for this helpful blog.
    I am still at the stage of choosing an appropriate vps.
    I went thru all the posts and I have some questions (pard me if this message is long)
    1) I have a Windows Vista installed; should I follow
    Mike recommendation (March 30)? Can you give some more details?
    2) I don't have admin privilege on my (work) computer. I need
    a web access; please explore more mynor thread about VZPP (April 8)
    How it works? Is it provided as default or add-in?
    3) If VPSLand provide web access, then I prefer using their service
    4) vpsland offer 1 remote desktop connection, while wvps offer 2. What's
    the difference? Is this the number of remote access that I can have?
    5) I am always on travel and I need UNLIMITED access from ANYWHERE...
    How to overcome this? Is web access the solution?
    6) What about security? can anybody "view" my vps? We need this vps
    to do trading work... and of course we do not want any spies!!
    Thanks in advance
  • Kian
    Hi Ckowyong,
    This simplified method works.
    Another way to run the restart is as follows (contributed by the support of SWVPS):
    Create a file called "autoreboot.bat" on your VPS desktop. Inside it add
    the following 3 lines:
    shutdown -r
    pause
    shutdown -a
    Then setup a scheduled task to run this file daily at:
    Start -> All programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks
  • hi Kian/Dave,
    sorry for not answering that question sooner.
    instead of using :
    C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /r /t 60 /f /c “VPS Restarting”
    ... try simplifying it to just this :
    C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe /r /t 60 /f
    let me know how it goes by posting the outcome here, ok?
    hope this solves the prob.
    Hello Ckowyong,
    First - many many thanks for your Guide. It is very well written, very helpful. I've follwed all the steps and have the same problem Kian about has: at VPSLand when I try to run the restart I get a momentary flash of a black window with text
    and then nothing happens.
    What could be causing this not to work?
  • Kian
    I'm using swvps and trying to configure the auto restart of my vps. I followed the steps given in the manual to test run the "daily restart" but only a flash of black screen appear (similar to the black command prompt screen when you run the "start.cmd"), then nothing happened.
    Auto restart MT 4 when we restart our VPS.
    Just clik right mouse button at the at start menu==>open===>program folder===>start up folder
    Then copy and paste your short cut to this folder
  • hi Mynor,
    yes... you can use VZPP to control and work with your VPS too.
    hi Kian,
    the frequency for the restart is a personal preference. i do a daily reboot because i've seen that the statements that i publish to my website sometimes fail to upload. and by rebooting daily, the uploads have been working well.
    rebooting on Sat or Sun weekly is perfectly sound in my opinion.
    ck
  • Kian
    why do we need to schedule a reboot for the VPS? How often should it be? is it necessary to do it every day or once a week will do as well?
    I am using http://www.vpsland.com/ With this VPS they gave me the facility to control my VPS through the web .They caledd it VZPP control panel From this web i can restart my VPS ,upload file and other facility..It is very convinience
  • hmm.... seems like SWVPS are using 64-bit verison for their Windows Server.... a bit unlikely, but that folder "Program Files (x86)" indicates so.
    from Microsoft :
    "Windows x64 Edition redirects the \Program Files directory for all programs that are 32-bit during the installation to the \Program Files(x86) directory. Programs that 64-bit are installed into the \Program Files directory."
    to play safe, just install a fresh MT4 and let the system decide where to put it. should not go wrong that way. as far as i can see from MetaQuotes.net, MT4 is still a 32-bit application.
    Hi
    we have been attempting all kinds of methods of connecting and taking over the console using the mstsc /V: ip /console from windows Vista. but know mater what we do it starts a new session and does not take over the console. However when using the same command from another machine OS windows server 2003 it will work and take over the Console session as needed. I have a suspission that this may have something to do with Vista or there are some default setings that are throwing us off. Do you have any idea or have heard that Vista has issue with this RDP Console OverTake?
    Hi Guys
    If anyone trying to administer their VPS under console mode I strongly recommend the following free application called Royal TS.
  • hi Brandon,
    does the start.cmd start the MT4 properly when you invoke it manually?
    are you absolutely sure that you are logging into the VPS in CONSOLE mode? the command line in the shortcut should read something like this :
    mstsc.exe /v:123.333.444.555 /console
    if both the above are fine, then i may need to log into your VPS to have a look to see what's wrong. let me know how it goes.
    Thank you very much for the guide CK, I would have been lost without it.
    I am having a bit of trouble with the daily restart though. I am using swvps and I followed the guide perfectly and got everything to work but the MT4 session boot up after scheduled restart.
    The vps will restart as scheduled but when I log back in from my base PC the MT4 session is not up. It is failing to boot up with the VPS restart. But it does start up 30 seconds after I log back in from my base PC.
    Does anyone know where I might look to fix this perhaps? Thank!
    it's normal that the VPS feels slow... you are looking at it over the internet... so it's bound to be slow. speed should be usable though. you could explore www.logmein.com for an alternative access method (vs Remote Desktop Connection)... i think LogMeIn has better data compression which makes the screens faster.
  • trias
    ok, can i use other software to autorestart?
    second, vps looks more slowly than localcomputer, is it normal?and do you know how to accelerate it? thanks
  • email feature is dependent on the EA. if the EA allows it, you can enable it at the EA and then set up the EMAIL feature like what you see here :
    http://www.ckowyong.com/blog/members/mt4_email.gif
    it's a technical thing and it's hard to explain everything you see on the picture. but basically, you will need to configure your SMTP server and account details into MT4 to have it send email alerts to you.
    if you want them to be sent to your mobile as an SMS, you will need to check with your mobile provider if they have an SMTP server you can use to send the SMS out from your VPS. the destination email address will then look like mobile-number@mobile-company.com
    this is the best i can do without going into the gory details about SMTP servers and accounts...etc etc.
  • regarding how to publish your MT4 statements onto a website so that you can see your statements anywhere-anytime, you will first need to have a website where you can upload/ftp the statements to.
    to get your own website, you can register one for yourself at www.3ix.com. if you don't mind, you could use my affiliate link to order it : http://www.3ix.org/sys/aff.php?aff=2371
    just take their cheapest plan at $1/month and also pay the $12 per year for your domain name (ie. www.yourname.com)
    after ordering, 3ix will inform you when your web-space is ready for use. you do not need to create a website or anything like that. all you need is your personal web-space for you to upload/ftp your MT4 statement to... so you can access it at anytime/anywhere.
    over at the MT4 platform, you will need to use the "PUBLISHER" feature to set up the statement upload. here's an example of how it will look like :
    http://www.ckowyong.com/blog/members/mt4_publis...
    the above is by no means a step-by-step guide of setting it up.... so you will need a fair bit of exploration to get this going. please give it a try and post your questions here if you hit any road-blocks.
    VPSLAND does not pay commissions for referrals.... so it does not really matter :O)
    I just started looking at the VPS option and checked out your favorite VPS services. vpsland.com/winplans.html has double ram limited offer right now. I think im going to take advantage of this offer. Not sure if you want me to put you as reffering party, if you have any type of relationship with them.
    Regards. Luk.
    hi mynor,
    just want to share...
    u can use ftp://11.222.333.44/ too for upload file to vps...
  • explore it a bit. if there's a file manager and an upload function, then "YES".
    else, you will need to email the file to yourself, then go into your VPS to access your web-based email to detach the file into your VPS.
    Hi Ckowyong
    Once we rent the VPS we will get our web Virtual Private Server’s control panel website address eg.Http://64.111.222.333:3456 / .What are the facilty we have when we acces this site form our PC. Could we upload our file from our PC and then transfer it to our VPS?
  • hi mynor,
    1) a VPS comes with no additional software...Internet Explorer is available though since it's part of the Windows operating system.
    2) you'll have to email to yourself. that's the easiest way, but not the only way.
    When we leased the VPS of vpsland and Wsvps what are the basic sofware that already load in the VPS.
    1)Is there Internet Explore? or Mozilla firefox or Microsoft office..
    2)How to transfer file from our PC to our VPS.? Is there a facilty to transfer form the web? or by emailing ourself?
    C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4.2\terminal.exe
    ping localhost -n 30
    start 1 C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4\terminal.exe
    exit (autostart for first icons)
    How about autostart for second icons
  • hi mynor,
    you are right. restart for SWVPS has to be configured in the VPS control panel... the method documented in my guide is only good for VPSLAND. technically, there's no difference whether configured within the VPS or at the control panel. both does the same thing... ie. run the shutdown.exe program.
    you don't have to create 10 x start.cmd file. open the start.cmd file in NotePad and you will know what needs to be done.
    1)To restart the VPS .I think i will scheduled it weekly ie Saturday or Sunday.
    But in Swvps and VPS there are a control panel where you can restart or reboot our VPS from the web.Which is the better option?Configure the restart at our VPS or through the web?
    2)For eg i have 10 accounts so for the automatic start of 10 acounts.i have to create 10 start.cnd in the start up folder in the VPS?
    1 Meta file eats up 100 mb of space so 10 meta is around 1 G .the utilasation is only 20%..If i have more than 10 manage accounts i have to upgrade to 10 G VPS.
  • >Configure your MT 4 to start automatically when window start up
    A : in case your VPS restarts itself for some reason (power-outage, OS error...etc), you can be sure that your MT4 will come up after the OS reboots. as a VPS is a small portion of a node, if there's a critical error in another VPS on the same node, the entire node may reboot (and so does your VPS). unless you are sure that your service provider informs you every time this happens, you may be better off automating it. furthermore, automating it will eliminate the need to rush to a computer to log in and start it manually... unless you or your EA can tolerate a couple of hours (being optimistic) of down time.
    >Disconecting from your VPS and securing it.
    A : it's meant for the less technical readers... as some may think that if they power down their personal computer, the VPS might shutdown too.
    >Can you create 10 icons of IBFX on the VPS.The purpose is to run the EA on 10 manage account.simutaneously
    A : you can create as much as the available RAM allows you to. the basic plan from SWVPS and VPSLAND can only run about 4. running 5 will be stretching it. it also depends on how "light" or "heavy" your EA is.... and how many charts is it attached to. you'll need to test to find an optimum level.
    to install multiple instances of MT4, install it in a different folder everytime you want to add an instance.
    eg. :
    "C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4\terminal.exe"
    "C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4.1\terminal.exe"
    "C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4.2\terminal.exe"
    "C:\Program Files\Interbank FX Trader 4.3\terminal.exe"
    this will give you 4 instances... but you will only have 1 icon on your desktop. you will then need to duplicate the icon and specify in each the new path to each instance.
    you can monitor your VPS health at the VPS control panel (not the one you see after logging into your VPS). the URL to access your VPS control panel should look like this : https://111.222.333.444:4643
    if you see utilisation at 90%, better don't add any more instance of MT4.
    Hi ckowyong
    You have done a great job and good works on the explaining the set up on VPS to the cyber comunity
    I have read ur instruction and needs futher clarification on step 4
    (Configure your MT 4 to start automatically when window start up)
    What is the purpose for.As long as the icon in my VPS i can log on my MT manually
    Step 5(disconecting from your VPS and securing it.)
    As long as it runs on VPS what matter happens on our PC(power down/line disconnect) the MT will keep on running.onVPS
    Can you create 10 icons of IBFX on the VPS.The purpose is to run the EA on 10 manage account.simutaneously
    Thanks again for your guide.
  • hi cyberpasta,
    AutoAdminLogin=1 means that the system will use the administrator's username and password (if available in the registry) to log in automatically whenever the system starts up.
    - ck
  • Today seem not working, very extrange!! Just a question, when I edit the registry, I see AutoAdminLogin, the default value is 1, what this means?
    Thanks very much for your help and your vps guide.
  • hi Cyberpasta,
    cool. i'm glad it's working now :O). btw, could you give me some feedback on the MT4 Guide please? thanks - ck
  • I'm using VPSLAND. I htink now is ok. I connect to my VPS, login and Metatrader was there running!! Before when I logged , Start task begun running and then Metatrader, maybe a didn't let enough time to restart. (Sorry for my english)
  • hi Cyberpasta,
    could you check if the registry settings that you have made are still there after a restart? if they are not there, then you may want to relook into the part of the guide that emphasis on the need to login in CONSOLE mode.
    btw, which VPS provider are you using? SWVPS or VPSLAND...etc?
    hope this helps - ck
  • I can't make my VPS autologin. I follow step by step your guide but when I restart the vps a log in is required.
  • hi Rudi,
    as long as both of you use the 'CONSOLE' method to connect, both of you should see the same session.... although i believe only one at a time. - ck
  • Rudi
    i found another problem about remote connection..
    i connect to the vps and finish the setting,and ea already run..and after that my friend make a connection too to the vps..the vps will make a new another session(profile)...so when the EA Open Position,it will double....
    can u help me how to solve this problem?
    thx
  • hi Leo,
    glad it helped :O) - ck
  • Leo
    Thank you SO MUCH for the guide, it was extremely helpful. It was very nice of you to take the time to write it so clearly and thoroughly.
  • hi Rudi,
    i tried looking for an answer but found nothing. you may want to try posting at MetaQuote's forum or support center. - ck
  • Rudi
    i have already finished the vps installation process...and know all the metatrader are running well...thx ckowyong...:)
    if i want the metatrader open on maximized window..what command i must add on file "start.cmd" ??
  • hi Kevin,
    yes... that was my intention too... to be able to see how my account is doing from anywhere, anytime.
    to do that, you will need a website so that your MT4 can FTP the statement to your webserver. you can get a cheap one from my 'good deals' section. the one at 3ix costs only US$1 per month... one of the cheapest i've come across so far. once your domain and web-server is ready, just drop me a mail and i'll pass you more information.
    hope that helps.
    - ck
    ps : this blog is hosted at 3ix. as long as you pay your bills promptly, everything should work well.
  • Kevin
    A technical question for you that is somewhat related to vps. How are you using your vps to make your mt4 statements available for everyone to look at? It is a great way to see the progress of your ea without logging into your server!
  • hi Kevin,
    glad you found it useful :O) - ck
  • Kevin
    Good job with the manual. I used it to setup my VPS. Works great!
  • hi Rudi,
    i can't remember exactly, but i think you can just put anything you want when prompted to enter a domain name. just make sure you are not changed extra for things that you do not need. total charge for the Windows VPS whould be US$19. if you see more, then you probably have selected more than you need.
    hope that helps. - ck
  • Rudi
    dear ckowyong...
    i have read your vps manual already...want to ask you...when i order from swvps.com ,there a choice..hosting signup,this mean i must create an domain name?
    Thx
