exciting developments… “forex expert advisor reviews”

William Boatright (a.k.a. wackena) contacted me 2 days back… wanting to explore “…potential ways for market exposure…” for his famous Bogie-ATC2007-1 EA that finished 2nd place in the recent 2007 Automated Trading Championship. you can read about him in an interview here : http://championship.mql4.com/2007/news/316

William has been kind enough to send me a copy of his Bogie-ATC2007-1 EA to forward-test on this blog. i think he’s showing a lot of confidence in himself and his EA by doing so. you will be hearing more about Bogie-ATC2007-1 from me in the coming weeks for sure! :O)

!! be careful if you reboot your VPS or MT4 computer daily !!

i’ve realised that some Expert Advisors do not like reboots. the FractalWizard EA is an example. the forward-test that i’m doing has opened 4 sells that did not register on the test that Lin (the creator of the EA) is running at http://fxhope.com/performance/FractalWizard_DetailedStatement.htm. this prompted him to contact me… which lead to the conclusion that the daily reboots that i do on my VPS(s) and dedicated server could be responsible for it’s unexpected behaviour. i’m beginning to think that the reboots are also the reason why my Steinitz HAS MTF EA hasn’t made a trade. this will all be fixed come 2nd Jan 2008… so please ignore the FractalWizard EA forward-test statement for now.

once again, i would like to remind everyone reading this blog that i am offering rebates for commercial Expert Advisors when you buy through me. the rebates will be given to you via a KIVA.org gift certificate. it’s REAL CASH delivered to you only after passing through the hands of someone who’s been living in poverty in a 3rd world country. you save money, and in the process, help the less fortunate get out of poverty. i can’t think of any better way to make use of money to make this world a better place! talk about renewable energy… i think KIVA.org is creating “renewable money”!

in the past week, i’ve been introduced to a couple of interesting Expert Advisors that looks really good. i’m currently considering buying them to test on the blog. and if they prove profitable, you’ll be sure that i’ll negotiate a good discount for my mailing list subscribers! :O) if you want in, you can join my mailing list here :

wishing everyone a very prosperous 2008!

PS : i’ve worked out a great deal for the PointBreak Expert Advisor by Lin. more information will be going out in the next newsletter! :O)

[update on FractalWizard issues : 29 dec 2007] -…. after spending a couple of hours with Lin over Skype, he managed to figure out the reason for the differences in his forward-test vs those of his subscribers.  details of the findings are within the “comments” section in this post.

Expert Advisors that i would trade LIVE with… “forex expert advisor reviews”

i’ve been asked soooo many times which are my favourite EAs… and i’ve always answered in a neutral way… until yesterday.

a recent visitor to the blog (by the initials of A.A.) asked this question : “out of the five EAs you tested, which one do you like the most?”

in the past, i would have said “none”… as there weren’t many Expert Advisors that i would trade LIVE with. however, in the recent weeks, i began to see the light… after traveling through the the tunnel for over 4 months. at a time where many have given up on the thought of finding a profitable EA (visit the forums and you will feel this sentiment), i started to understand what makes a good EA and which ones that i’ve tested are good enough for me to go LIVE. to cut the story short, this is how i replied to A.A.’s email (with a little more detail added in) :

=========================

question #1 from A.A. : Out of the five EAs you tested, which one do you like the most?

right now, these are my favourites in order of preference… but it it’ll take a very very long email to explain why i like them and why i’ve placed them in this order… but i’ll try to explain briefly :

#1 : PointBreak (by Lin)

Reason : this is an EA based on the actual EA that Lin is using to trade his customer’s money. he has been using it for over 1 year now with good monthly returns. because of this, and because of the confidence that Lin has with this EA, i believe it’s one that can stand the test of time (it has already for more than a year).

being a mathematical EA, it’s not prone to unexpected market movements. it does not try to predict where the market will go, but takes advantage of the fact that the market trends (up or down) more than it ranges. as long as it’s trending up or trending down, it will continue to make small trades in the direction of the trend. if the trend reverses, it will change the direction of the trades to trade WITH the trend. this acts as like a hedge, but essentially, it’s doing something called pyramiding and averaging.

when the pair (EURUSD) starts to range (ie. goes flat), PointBreak may have a tendency to experience a drawdown. during this period, it kind of turns on a 2nd engine which attempts to get small wins from the ranging market to mediate the drawdown. once the trend resumes, it will start it’s pyramiding and averaging again.

something to take note of is that the EA treats all the above trades as one single CYCLE… and the cycle will only end when the NETT of all trades are in profit…. hence drawdowns are expected when trading with this EA. this may make some traders uneasy… but looking at the historical behavior of the EURUSD and the way the Money Management is programmed into PointBreak, all these started to make sense to me. as long as the Money Management is kept conservative, PointBreak will never over trade. and since the EURUSD historical trends more than it ranges, the mathematical logic behind the EA will put the probability of closing out each cycle with a profit in the trader’s favor.

#2 : FractalWizard (by Lin)

Reason : it’s based on a contrarian approach for trade entry… which i think gives it an advantage over traditional entry methods that waits for confirmation and often ends up chasing the trend (ie. usually late). i also like that the EA has some built-in intelligence in it’s exit strategy which attempts to cut losses short and let profits run (TP = 100 pips, initial stop based on an indicator which makes it adaptive to the market conditions). keyword here is ADAPTIVE.

being an EA that adapts to the market conditions, i’m expecting that FractalWizard will not require “re-optimisation” very often. EAs with fixed-pip stop-losses and trailing stops, in my opinion, are in a way “optimised” to be profitable in a certain market. over time, such an EA may become less profitable or may even start to generate losses.

due to FractalWizard’s adaptive nature, as well as it’s good forward-testing results (at fxhope.com), i think this EA is poised to remain profitable for a good while. it’s not a very exciting EA to watch (it does not trade very often), but i think it’s definitely one that is worth watching.

#3 : DoublePlay v4.0 (by Hal Chapman)

Reason : i think Hal has managed to make the new version of this very popular EA profitable again… judging from the good forward-testing that i’m getting : 100% winners so far! however, i’m not sure how long it will last… since it looks like the settings may have been “optimised” based on the fact that the stop-loss and trailing stop levels were changed, but are still fixed-pip values. however, a new BE (break-even) feature has been added, and it now has an optional feature of utilizing invisible stops to make sure that brokers are not able to do stop-hunting on your stops. these new features should be able to enhance the EA’s profitability… although i’ve not tested them to be able to confirm so.

despite my reservations, i know what Hal Chapman is capable of. his DoublePlay v3.5.2 was very impressive back in Sept (http://ckowyong.com/blog/?p=17) where it doubled an account within a month. Hal knows his stuff, and i think i like what i’m seeing in DoublePlay v4.0 so far.

if i’m going LIVE with DoublePlay, i’ll probably wait till the holiday season is over and when volume is back to normal. priced at US$199 (before ck’s rebates), DoublePlay is likely to pay for itself within the 1st week if it continues to perform as what we’ve seen in our forward-test.

question #2 from A.A. : Which EA are you using for your live trading?

none right now. the last one was DoublePlay v3.5.2 back in Oct. i’ve been in 100% testing mode since then.

if i were to go LIVE again, i’ll probably go LIVE with DoublePlay v4.0 first while it’s showing good profitability to get some quick profits. once my trading capital grows… i may move the money out of DoublePlay and spread them over PointBreak (lower risk / better consistency) and maybe FractalWizard if the forward-test continues to show good results in Jan 08.

hope i’ve answered your questions :O) answering your email has also helped me crystalize my trading plan… so i’ve got to thank you for your questions too! :O)

=========================

IMPORTANT : please note that the above is purely based on my personal experiences and preferences. it is not a recommendation to buy the mentioned Expert Advisors. purchase of the various Expert Advisors is at the buyer’s own discretion. i am an independent reviewer, and do not guarantee their quality or profitability in any way. it’s your duty to read this disclaimer before trading with real money.

please consider joining my mailing list if you would like to get rebates (ranges from US$25 to US$50) when purchasing the various Expert Advisors that i’m testing. all you have to do is fill in your name and email address below :

in the coming days, i will be sending out information to my mailing list subscribers about how they can enjoy a high US$4.50 rebate for each round-turn lot traded. i’m planning to go LIVE with a couple of Expert Advisors come Jan… and i’m planning to make my LIVE account statements available to the members of my mailing list. i know it’s not much of an incentive, but if you would like to trail my progress trading with EAs, consider joining my mailing list, ok?

happy trading to all!! …. and have a Very Merry Christmas!! :O)

latest happenings… “finding the best expert advisor”

just a quick one :

  1. FractalWizard EA : this much anticipated EA has been put into action this morning.  you can see the LIVE forward-test statement by going to the “live statements” above.  Lin has also updated fxhope.com a fair bit. most interesting is the “settings” page… where he explains exactly how FractalWizard should be used.  he reveals a lot about the risk & reward information about trading this EA, which is i think priceless!  he also covers the strengths & weaknesses of the EA… which makes understanding and reiewing the EA so much easier.  it’s likely the best documented Expert Advisor i’ve seen to-date… which i think many would agree.
  2. CarryGrid EA has been doing great for 3 straight weeks.  equity is up +26% in 3 weeks.  as it does only BUYS, the EA’s performance is solely dependent on the up-trend of the GBP, or weakness of the JPY.  it would have been nice if CarryGrid could participate in the other direction too.  (according to myfxtools.com, the newer verison will do SELLS as well as a form of hedge)  PS : please note that i am running CarryGrid with some intervention.  i prefer to close all open trades when market opens early monday morning, since i prefer to let the EA look for new positions rather than hold on to loosing trades… waiting for them to turn profitable.
  3. PointBreak EA is busy doing it’s pyramiding and averaging… it’s a fast and furious trader… and since it’s a longer-term strategy, we’ll need a bit more time to really appreciate what it’s trying to do.  i’m running the forward-test on 2 brokers, IBFX and FXDD.  and since FXDD demo accounts do not allow micro-lots, i had to increase the capital amount to $1,000,000 (intended to use $100,000… but clicked the wrong number by mistake) to allow it to run on FXDD.  according to Lin, a $100,000 demo on FXDD should do the trick.
  4. DoublePlay v4.0 has also done well last week… gaining +19% in a week.  i’ll talk more about DoublePlay in the next post.

Steinitz’s HAS MTF EA has not traded for some time now… i am checking with Don if i’ve made any mistake in my settings.  PipForia also has not been performing as expected… and i’m checking with David about it too.  more about them later….

CarryGrid EA revealed… “forex exper advisor reviews”

**update : thanks for all those who enquired… Lin’s FractalWizard EA is officially not on sale yet.  expected launch : 17 Dec 2007.  PointBreak EA is being sold ‘exclusively’ by Paul Heap at myfxtools.com

this morning… when i took a peek at how our fantastic CarryGrid EA was doing, i was surprised (just kidding :O) to see that there was a big floating loss… bringing the equity down to about break even… negating away all the gains that we had over the last 2 weeks.  among the open trades, the worst one was -409 pips at about 0330 GMT.  a few others were not too far behind.  this is almost a mirror image of what happened at http://www.easyforexdata.com/detailedstatement.htm !

it makes one think… is there any stop loss at all in CarryGrid?  and if there’s a stop loss, is it further than -1200 pips away like what we have seen in the statement at easyforexdata.com?  some of the questions have been answered here : http://www.myfxtools.com/blog/2007/12/drawdown-and-unwinding.html

based on the above, and the fact that the current version of CarryGrid makes only uni-directional trades (ie. BUYS only) on the GBPJPY & GBPCHF, i feel that the CarryGrid EA is too dependent on the strength of the Sterling.  if the Sterling trends down as strong as the EURO went up, i believe those trading LIVE with CarryGrid may find it hard to sleep at night.  let’s hope that the newer version of CarryGrid, which is able to do some kind of hedging, will bring us some hope in finding a reliable and profitable Expert Advisor soon.

enlightened trader… “finding the best forex expert advisor”

wow!  what a week.  if i told you what happened, you’ll probably would think that i am pulling your leg :O)

i’m not sure if you know what the “Law of Attraction” is about, but since the start of this blog in late august 2007, the “Law of Attraction” has been doing wonders for me each and every day.  this humble blog has attracted professional traders, quants, doctors, scientists, Expert Advisor creators (Hal Chapman, Bill Austin, Glenn Bacon & Don Steinitz), a couple of fund managers…. the list goes on.

however, in the past week, i’ve had the honour to meet (face-to-face!) someone really special.  you can find out more about him here :

http://www.forexhope.com

PS : join his mailing list if you would like to receive a trial copy of his PointBreak EA !

his website may not be much to look at, but i assure you, this man is way ahead of many of us in terms of trading and creating profitable Expert Advisors.  he’s got a very unique way of looking at the market.  we all know about Technical Analysis(TA) and Fundamental Analysis(FA)…and how 95% of all traders (mostly using TA and FA) looses money, yes?  this man’s niche is in Mathematical Analysis.

if you are in my mailing list (join here), you will be receiving a FULL account of my encounter with this ‘enlightened’ trader.  i’ll probably write more about him in the next post…  but in a nutshell, he’s a professional forex trader and fund manager… and, lucky for all of us, he is starting to make his Expert Advisors available to the public.  one of his Expert Advisor has just gone on sale here -> myfxtools.com

as a recap, these are the current list of Expert Advisors that we are testing now :

  1. PointBreak - create by Lin (myfxtools.com)  *new*
  2. CarryGrid v5 (myfxtools.com)
  3. DoublePlay v4.0 (halcyonfx.com)  *new*
  4. UpStream EURJPY H1 (iticsoftware.com)
  5. PipForia Hedged Grid v004float
  6. Steinitz HAS MTF v2.63
  7. PipBoxer v2.0.6
  8. DoublePlay v3.5.2 (retired)
  9. FX-Bandit v1.3-1 (retired)
  10. RobinHood v4.9 (retired)
  11. EuroX2 (retired)
  12. … and a few others that are privately being tested (non-commercial)

all live forward-test statements are updated every 10 mins.

with the realease of DoublePlay v4.0, i’m retiring v3.5.2 and putting v4.0 on the tracks.  given the past performance of DoublePlay, i’m hoping that this new version will be even more profitable.

CarryGrid v5 has been performing very well in the last 2 weeks.  as i’ve updated in the previous post, it’s now up +13.81%.  if you import the statement into Excel, you will see that gain in pips is a staggering +3042 pips !!  no kidding !!  here’s the spreadsheet to save you some time (click here to download spreadsheet)

you can verify the forward-test statement using the following investor read-only login ID/Password :

broker : IBFX
login      : 1725647
password   : 7rnxphh (investor read only password)

however, one thing i need to point out is that i do not know where CarryGrid places it’s initial stop-loss…. or if there’s even one at all.  an earlier forward-test statement of CarryGrid can be found here : http://www.easyforexdata.com/detailedstatement.htm … and just in case it disappears overnight (usually unflattering statements do), i’ve archived it here -> archive

in the statement at easyforexdata.com, you can see that CarryGrid made a lot of winning trades…. however, if you look at the open trades, you will find multiple floating losses, some of which are > -1200 pips down!!  due to these floating losses, the equity is slightly below break even.  this really puts things into perspective, doesn’t it?

anyway, i also have to add that i’ve been forward-testing CarryGrid v5 with a bit of manual intervention.  at the end of the first week of trading, there was a small number of floating losses.  i closed them all at the beginning of monday’s trading day to allow the Expert Advisor to do what it does best again … which is, in my opinion, finding good entries.  knowing that CarryGrid could hold on to losing trades, i’m making sure that i either close all trades at the end of friday, or at the very latest, on monday morning.  even with a big drawdown, i would lean towards cutting the losses based on the -1200 pip losses that we’ve seen earlier.  once again, thanks to the big guy up there for demo accounts and demo Expert Advisors… we are learning all this without risking a cent of real money :O)

new developments… “forex expert advisor reviews”

i’ve taken a back seat recently from keeping the blog updated… but rest assured… there are loads of stuff going on in the background :O)

for starters, we now have 2 more Expert Advisors :

  1. CarryGrid v5 (order here to get a $50 rebate!!)
  2. UpStream_EURJPY_H1 (purchased at US$199)

the CarryGrid v5 Expert Advisor has been quite impressive since it was started on 21 nov 2007.  the first trade was triggered only on 26 nov (it was waiting for the trend to go in the direction of the swap) … and within a week, the demo account is already up +10% !

[updated on 8th dec 2007 : CarryGrid v5] equity is up +13.8% after 2 weeks!!  i am really impressed so far.

UpStream_EURJPY_H1 is a different story.  after bugging the vendor for weeks, it was clear that the only way to get a copy of the Expert Advisor was to buy it.  so that’s what i did.  why did i decide to buy it?  have a look at this spreadsheet : UpStream_EURJPY_H1 Demo Statement Analysis

although the stop-loss was as big as RobinHood at -140 pips, the statement showed that the Expert Advisor was able to exit a loosing trade based on some other logic to cut losses short.  it’s ability to let profits run (with a take-profit target of +180 pips) looked good too.  hence my decision to purchase it.

***

we have also started testing a few new versions of the Expert Advisors that we are familiar with :

  1. Steinitz HAS MTF v2.63 *new*
  2. PipForia v004float *new*

according to Steinitz, this new version has been improved on quite a bit… however, i am still not very clear how the stop loss is implemented.  there’s a setting called StopLoss Method = UseInput… however, i can’t seem to find any clear indication of how it works.  i will clarify more on this and will be documenting it at the review section for Steinitz.

the good people behind PipForia had also contacted me about their Expert Advisor.  the previous run ended at about break-even… but it did show some potential during the testing period.  considering the way i’m running the tests (ie. 24×5 without intervention), the creator has sent me individual set files for each of the 3 pairs that this new version will be trading on : GBP/USD, EUR/JPY and USD/CAD… all on the 30M chart.  he has also advised that the Expert Advisor should be set to “hybernate” mode when the end of the week approaches… so that it does not hold open positions over the weekend…. which i think is sound advise.

so…for the record, we are now testing….

  1. CarryGrid v5
  2. UpStream EURJPY H1
  3. PipForia Hedged Grid v004float
  4. Steinitz HAS MTF v2.63
  5. DoublePlay v3.5.2 (on IBFX and FXDD)
  6. PipBoxer v2.0.6
  7. FX-Bandit v1.3-1 (retired)
  8. RobinHood v4.9 (retired)
  9. EuroX2 (retired)
  10. … and a few others that are privately being tested (non-commercial)

***

thanks to a fellow FX trader, i was introduced to 2 FX managed accounts : GalleonFX and one from FXCM (Sentiment Aggressive Fund).  i’m going to study them more in the next few weeks and possibly add them as part of my portfolio if they perform well.

i’ve also been researching on the various Introducing Brokers (IB) to find out the rebates that one can get for every round lot traded.  rebates varies a lot between IBs… and needless to say, there are many dodgy ones out there… just like Expert Advisor sellers.

i have spent a lot of time searching and evaluating the various IBs, and i believe i have found one that i feel comfortable with.  the MT4 broker that this IB support is FXDD… so i will be testing more with FXDD from now on to see if they are suitable for the Expert Advisors that we are testing here.  after negotiating with this IB, i believe that they are credible and trustworthy (they are a NFA registered IB and have a clean record).  with a negotiated rebate of US$4.50 per round trade, i think no other IB can offer anything better (in terms of rebate $, credibility of the IB, and the MT4 broker it uses).

i’m now in the final stages of registering myself with this IB (it’s quite a tedious process!!).  once its completed, i would be able to refer you to them so that you will be able to trade with FXDD and get US$4.50 back for every round trade traded.  if you are an active trader (be it manual or automated), you will know how much this can add up to over time.  i’ll let everyone know more about this in due time.

NOTE : this US$4.50 rebate is only possible because i, as a “referring party”, have opted to channel every cent of the rebate back to the trader (most referring parties will pocket between US$0.50 to US$1.00 as referring fee)  why am i doing this?  …because every dollar counts.  all brokers exist because they want to earn the spread that we pay when we trade.  and if we can all get back a part of that spread through a rebate, we all should!  US$4.50  is what this IB has given me to split between me and the traders that i refer.  as much as i want to be profitable in trading forex, i would also like to see you succeed too… hence the full US$4.50 will be going back to you.  it’s hard enough as it is… so my logic is to help each other as much as we can.  i’m happy just getting my own rebates… so what you generate is your’s to keep.

in case you are wondering how much can the rebates add up to… the DoublePlay v3.5.2 demo has traded 107.10 lots since it began about 3 months ago.  that would equate to about US$480 at US$4.50 a lot.  i’m not sure about you, but if it’s there for the taking, i’ll take it. period.
